Dauntless in Dominaria
Gatherer-Terrible Magic

Shawn Main, one of the Magic designers, came up with the “Gatherer-Terrible Magic” format.  The only cards which are legal in this format are basic lands and cards which are rated 2 stars or less by the users of our Gatherer website.  I piloted this aggressive green ramp deck yesterday.  The deck was pretty fun, but was pretty soft to black’s removal.  The Circles of Protection in the sideboard are just filler; the metagame is too unknown to have a clear idea of what to sideboard.

Aaron Forsythe, Magic R&D’s director, won our little three-man tournament with a deck that had similar mana fixing to mine, but with a lot more black card advantage cards.

Knights vs. Dragons + Fire & Lightning = …

I recently posted on Twitter (@EthanFleischer) about my trip to Portland, Oregon.  I found myself in that city with only a duel deck (Knights vs. Dragons) in my pocket, Magic-wise.  I soon had a multiplay game scheduled at a friend’s house, but what to play with?  I found a copy of Premium Deck Series: Fire & Lightning for 50% off at Fred Meyer, and commenced to brew.  This is what I came up with:

Lands:

1 Ghitu Encampment

21 Mountain

1 Plains

1 Selesnya Sanctuary

Creatures:

1 Bogardan Hellkite

1 Cinder Wall

2 Dragon Whelp

1 Dragonspeaker Shaman

1 Figure of Destiny

1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage

1 Kilnmouth Dragon

1 Mordant Dragon

2 Mudbutton Torshrunner

1 Shivan Hellkite

1 Skirk Prospector

1 Thunder Dragon

1 Voracious Dragon

Other Spells:

2 Armillary Sphere

1 Bogardan Rager

1 Breath of Darigaaz

1 Browbeat

1 Captive Flame

1 Cone of Flame

1 Dragon’s Claw

2 Fiery Fall

1 Hammer of Bogardan

1 Jaws of Stone

1 Loxodon Warhammer

1 Oblivion Ring

1 Pillage

1 Punishing Fire

1 Reprisal

1 Reverberate

1 Seething Song

1 Seismic Strike

1 Spitting Earth

We ended up playing Planechase.  I squared off against a Bant Commander deck, some sort of Five Color Artifact-Based Commander deck, and a 60-card mono-green ramp deck.  The ground rapidly became clogged with Goats (from Goldmeadow), and my dragons were grounded by some enchantment or other.  Breath of Darigaaz cleared the Goats out of the way, and I managed to whittle my opponents’ life totals down during the Planechasing shenanigans.  Finally, we ended up in Glimmervoid Basin, and I cast Jaws of Stone, cast Reverberate on it, and saw everyone take a bunch of damage, finishing out the game.  I had only lost a couple life, so I was safe.  Not bad for a burn deck with a bad mana curve.
